Internet Explorer 8 Argh!!!

Last night I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 as part of my automatic updates package. Then I visited my blog. Argh, there’s a vertical line to the right of my header. Does anyone else see it?

Also, sometimes when the blog loads, I not only get the vertical line, but graphic elements in the left of the header and around the rollovers are affected, as well. Strangely, when I pass my mouse over the menu rollovers, the graphics correct themselves, and then I only have the aggravating vertical line to the right of my header.

I see IE8 comes with a “Compatability View” button at the top of the browser to the left of the Reload button. If I click this button, I don’t have the issues with the out-of-place graphic elements, I only get the aggravating vertical line. But then what does that mean to other browsers out there? That my blog will look all messed up unless they have clicked that Compatability View button as well.

I’m really not impressed. I’ve updated and checked all my other browsers (Opera, Firefox, SeaMonkey, and Safari) and of course Internet Explorer 8 is the only one that creates this problem. Unfortunately, it’s the predominant browser of use, so I need to ensure my site displays correctly in the dratted IE. Ergh, argh, triple-Bill-the-Cat gack!

I’ve contacted the web designer who did my blog coding for me when I could not manage it myself. Hopefully she can get me out of this mess.

I'm irritated because my posts won't publish.

  1. Maybe she fixed it, because it looks good, and I’m using IE. Google keeps trying to send me a new toolbar and I’ve been refusing them. After I had the last new toolbar, my computer ran slower for awhile. I don’t want to go through that again, and this toolbar works fine for me.

  2. That’s funny you can’t see it Edie. I have heard from the designer who coded the blog for me, and it appears that the code was somehow corrupted. I have instructions on how to fix it (thank you, Vivian), but haven’t tried it yet.

Are you using IE 7 or IE 8? The problem wasn’t with IE 7. It’s new with IE 8.

I need to fix the blog template. Urk. Nervous about that. Will try to get to it later today. Need to get in my day of writing first.

  3. I’ve had issues with IE messing up my blog. Hubby took a look once and said some things can’t be fixed, and we’ll probably have to put a disclaimer up telling people which browser it looks best in. Dumb IE. LOL

  4. Thanks, Avery and Wendy. I can see it – you have to have IE 8 installed to see it. IE 8 is very new.

I now know how to fix it, but I’m in the last chapter of my book so it has to wait. It sounds like not many people (that come here, anyway) have upgraded to IE8 yet, so I’ll get to it when I get to it. 🙂

  5. I see it-right there- white vertical line- sorry- ever since I “updated” to the “fabulous and fast” IE8 my computer has slowed down to a rapid crawl…chug, chug… sigh. I should have known better than to update.

    *hugs*

  6. Actually, Nancy, that’s good you can see it. It means I’m not insane.

I’ll post when I’ve fixed it, and you can have another look, ‘kay? Please? But wait until I post it’s fixed. The Whippy is calling!

  7. Cindy,
I downloaded IE8 a month or so ago and I now have problems reading a blog I really like…so I’m not a huge IE8 fan. I do see the line, however, it wasn’t something immediately noticable to me on your page. Had you not told me exactly where to look for it, it would’ve taken my eyes a while to spot it. So, don’t worry too much!

  8. Thanks, Marilyn. I’m determined to get it fixed, however. I’m weird about these things.

I did notice IE8 has a “Compatability View” button to the left of the Refresh Browser button. Supposedly, if you click this button, issues with websites that displayed fine in IE7 but crappy in IE8 will go away. Well, some of them. Clicking the button doesn’t make my issue go away.

  9. Avery, before I began designing websites, I exclusively used Netscape. Never touched IE. However, until more people begin using Firefox than IE, IE has the most problems, so it’s now my default browser, because otherwise how would I become alerted to the problems? Like this problem with IE8 and my blog. Doesn’t show in ANY of my other browsers – SeaMonkey, Firefox, Opera and Safari. I have them all loaded on my computer, for design purposes. The only one I don’t have anymore is Netscape, which is ironic. Before I moved to IE, I used Netscape for my mail and my browser. Now, I use Eudora for mail.

  10. I’ve now noticed another problem with my blog since installing IE8, so I’m passing off the issues to a designer. She needs the headache more than I do, heh, heh.

  11. Well, she either fixed it, or my IE8 isn’t screwy, because it looked fine. I don’t use IE8, I use Firefox, and to hell with anyone who doesn’t. LOL If people are using the highly targeted and unreliable IE, it’s their own fault if things don’t work right.

    Yes, I’m a *itch. LOL

  12. She fixed it. 🙂

I never used to use IE for browsing until I began designing websites. I was a Netscape aficiondo, for browsing and for email. Because IE is the browser that always screws up designs, however, I went to it as my default. If a design looks good in IE, chances are it will look good in all the other browsers (although I check them, too, to make sure). If a site looks great in Firefox, though, it can still look like crap in IE.

Another reason I don’t use Firefox is that the dictionary in Facebook Scrabble doesn’t work properly with Firefox. I have to type in a word over and over until it takes it and then tells me if the game accepts it. It takes about four times to type in each damn word. IE works much better for FB Scrabble.

Oh, here’s a cool thing about IE8 I just discovered. There’s a mail icon beside the View Feeds icon (two away from the Home icon). If I click it, it loads my Eudora, and I didn’t have to set up anything. IE sleuthed its way through my hard drive and set it up for me (hmmm, am I really happy about this?). But I love the ease of accessing my email with a click of a button in the browser. That’s what I loved so much about Netscape back in the day, before it went the way of the dinosaur.

There’s SeaMonkey, which is email and browser combined, but I’m totally happy with Eudora, and until it suffers Netscape’s fate I want to continue using it. So, there. A good thing about IE8.

I could name a couple others, but then you’d probably stone me, LOL.
