I am totally and completely thrilled that WHERE SHE BELONGS<\/a> releases from Five Star\/Cengage today. WHERE SHE BELONGS<\/strong> is a departure from my usual romantic comedy fare and also a departure from Penny’s books, which are erotic romances. WHERE SHE BELONGS<\/strong> still has humorous moments, and the love scenes are “tasteful” (according to my mother), but it’s also a deeply emotional story about belonging and forgiveness.<\/p>\n

I’ve put the book cover up on this blog so many times, it’s not funny. But what’s book release day without the book cover?<\/p>\n

Excerpt!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following excerpt leads up to Jess and Adam’s first kiss. They are in Jess’s mother’s detached garage. Adam has been helping Jess with her recently deceased stepfather’s classic old car, which has mechanical issues. Jess and her mother have reunited after a long estrangement, and Jess doesn’t want to do anything (like have to convince her mother to sell the car) that could hamper the positive steps they are just learning to make in their relationship.<\/em><\/p>\n

Adam strode toward her. \u201cA friend of mine\u2019s a good mechanic. He\u2019ll look at it for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll talk to Mom about it in a couple of days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t put it off. You don\u2019t want her having transmission trouble after you leave.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but there\u2019s no point rushing her into something she isn\u2019t up to handling yet. Isn’t that what you said to me about the grocery shopping this morning?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019ll know best when to discuss it with your mom.\u201d His hand settled on the hood a scant inch from hers. Her fingers twitched. She would not move them and risk making him feel like he carried a contagious disease. \u201cI\u2019d hate to see her stuck without reliable transportation, especially come winter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The hot car hood cooked her hand. Specific lower regions of her body warmed up, too\u2014for reasons that had zippy to do with engine heat.<\/span><\/p>\n

God, what a time to redevelop a teenage crush.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will<\/em> talk to her, Adam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know. I didn\u2019t mean to imply otherwise.\u201d He brushed grime off her sweater sleeve. His gaze lifted to meet hers. \u201cYou\u2019re all dirty.\u201d His thumb grazed her cheek, and her skin tingled. This was crazy!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow did things go with the lawyer?\u201d he asked. \u201cNora was quiet after the meeting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t step back<\/em>, she ordered herself.<\/em> Don\u2019t relay how much his touch affects you.<\/em> \u201cShe needed time alone, um, to pull herself together. She\u2019s doing better now, though. A friend dropped by to see her this afternoon. That helped.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s faded-denim gaze pinned her in place. \u201cThe meeting went well?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She shrugged. \u201cPete left her in a good position financially. The house and land were paid off before she married him, and he had life insurance. If she wanted to buy a new car, she could. I\u2019d be willing to help her out, too, of course.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course.\u201d He seemed to lean toward her slightly. Or she toward him? Awareness of him licked at her nerve-endings like a constant, low-burning flame.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWould you like to stay for dinner? Mom wanted me to ask.\u201d A lie. The question had popped out. \u201cMolly brought over a casserole while you were gone. It\u2019s heating in the oven. She and Mom are showing the horses to the kids,\u201d she stupidly tacked on. Her rambling betrayed her nerves, which was silly. She\u2019d had relationships with other men since Danny. She could deal with this unwelcome attraction to Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want me to stay?\u201d he asked softly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUm . . . \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to be honest here, Jess. You\u2019re in town for six weeks\u2014that\u2019s a fair while. I could keep my distance. However, the more I think about it, the more I realize I don\u2019t want to. I\u2019d like to see you while you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean as in dating?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf that\u2019s what you want to call it. Although there aren\u2019t many places in Destiny Falls I could take you on a formal date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Then what did he have in mind? A hook-up? \u201cWell, I don\u2019t sleep around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He laughed. \u201cThat\u2019s gratifying to hear, because I wouldn\u2019t dream of sharing you.\u201d The scent of his aftershave floated to her, a heady mixture of moss and musk. \u201cI was thinking more along the lines of getting to know each other better, one on one. However, if you\u2019d like, we could always discuss our sleeping habits later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her face burned. Now he knew the thought of having sex with him had crossed her mind. She wanted to crawl beneath the car and hide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs there someone in Toronto?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Say yes.<\/em> \u201cNo, but\u2014\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThink about it for a few days. I\u2019ll catch you on the weekend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not staying for dinner?\u201d Her mother<\/em> would be crushed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t. Remember that big contract I mentioned Friday? I\u2019m initiating some silviculture surveys up past Valemount tomorrow. They\u2019re of the same nature, though smaller and less intensive. It\u2019s another opportunity to show what MountainTop can do, so I\u2019m leaving tonight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSilviculture?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTextbook definition\u2014the growing and tending of trees. We\u2019re doing mainly survival assessments of blocks planted three years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow long does starting the contract take?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTwo or three days. Why, miss me already?”<\/span><\/p>\n
