The Sexiest Hugh Alive

People magazine has declared that Australian actor Hugh Jackman is the Sexiest Man Alive for 2008. I can’t say I disagree with them. It’s about time he won the honor.

I definitely know he’s the sexist HUGH alive. I can say this with all authority, because I have a cousin named Hugh, and, sorry, Sonny, you ain’t got nothing on Mr. Jackman.

I love this quote:

The magazine’s executive editor, Jess Cagle, said Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” show that Jackman is a “surprising choice,” but he’d been on the editors’ minds “for a long time and it seemed like this was the year to do him.”

Ahem.

What say you? Does Hugh deserve the title? Who would you rather have seen in his place? Why do we keep track of such things? Why isn’t there a Sexiest Woman Alive? Isn’t that sexist?

  1. Well, I’d have to put James Purefoy a notch above Mr. Jackman, but only by a whisker or two *g*.

Of course, when my hubby smiles that special smile, he’s tops in my books 🙂

  2. Hey, Teresa, I was just about to log out when your comment came in!

I don’t know who James Purefoy is. Let me go Google…

Okay, I’m back. Very nice, but I prefer Hugh.

However, I think Blair Underwood should win at least every other year. Has he ever won? It’s a shame if he hasn’t.

  3. You’d have to actually watch Mr. Purefoy in action – it’s more than just a looks thing with him, just as it is with Hugh. There’s a scene in A Knight’s Tale (in which he plays the Black Prince) that I like to freeze every now and then because he looks so good 🙂

Not sure about Blair Underwood having won before, but I agree – he should definitely win from time to time!

  4. Hugh Jackman is yummy. More than that, he’s funny and multi-talented. And he looks great shirtless. He has my vote! 🙂

I’m looking forward to the movie Australia. I think my husband will enjoy it too.

  5. I don’t dispute Hugh as a choice–he definitely has something innate that goes beyond looks.

However, I always think it should be Jensen Ackles or Jared Padalecki, who are at their sexiest together. 🙂

I don’t think it’s sexist. I think People’s demographic skews heavily to the female and the women are constantly featured there and elsewhere, what with the fashion crap in addition to other stuff, and People’s just doing what sells magazines. Let Maxim do the Sexiest Woman Alive. 🙂

And I agree about Blair Underwood! I don’t think he’s ever won, but I’m pretty sure he’s been featured in the accompanying articles at some point.

  6. Teresa, I love A Knight’s Tale. I’ll have to watch it again – except I think Eldest Son might have confiscated it when he went away to university.

  7. Edie, I agree with you about the funny and multi-talented re: Mr. Jackman. Also, I happen to find it very sexy when these guys have a great relationship with their wives, which it sounds like he does.

For women, it’s usually so much more than about looks. A guy can perhaps not be the handsomest (is that a word?) fellow out there, but other elements can easily supersede looks – like wit and intelligence, that indefinable je ne sais quoi – and a six-pack doesn’t hurt. 😉

  8. Natalie, you’re making me Google…

    Okay, I’m back.

Um, I can’t look at those pictures of Jared Padalecki. He’s too young. When my sons are in their thirties, I’m sure I will be able to appreciate photos of buff guys in their twenties again. However, for now, any guy who looks under 27 or 28…I can’t look at their shirtless pictures, LOL. It gives me the Mom Creeps. Moms don’t goggle!

  9. Oh, Natalie, btw, I think we can safely assume that Sports Illustrated covers the Sexiest Women Alive when they publish their swimsuit editions.

  10. He’s not to be confused by “Huge Jackman” the porn star…. 🙂

My wife was drooling when Hugh was on Leno the other night….

  11. Oh, Natalie, btw, I think we can safely assume that Sports Illustrated covers the Sexiest Women Alive when they publish their swimsuit editions.

    Right! There you go!

And I just finished reading the People issue, and Blair Underwood is one of this year’s sexiest men!

Luckily, I have daughters, so there is no guilt marring my appreciation for men under 30.

  12. Yes, Natalie, you are very lucky in that regard.

My little sister has the same squeeby feeling when she sees pictures of bare-chested young men, because of the age of her son.

Strangely, when the sons are little, no squeeby!
