Six Month Eye Report, Round Two

As some of you might remember, I first had laser eye surgery in December 2011. My left eye, the reading eye, was perfect, and yesterday I had another checkup that reveals the left eye is still seeing as wonderfully as it did soon after the surgery.

The right eye was not so lucky. The first time around, I had SBK laser surgery, which is similar to LASIK but uses a laser to make the incision rather than an instrument. I was one of the unlucky few who experience regression. Twenty-four hours post-SBK, I could see distance what they call “20/20 minus.” That is to say the 20/20 line was a little fuzzy, and I missed a couple.

As the months progressed, my right eye regressed to the point where it was reading 20/50, which means that what a normal person can see at 50 feet, I could only see at 20 feet. Which meant I had to get glasses for driving and any time I wanted to see distance clearly (like going to the movies or attending a writer’s conference). The glasses brought my left reading eye up to speed. However, my distance right eye could not be made to see 20/20 even WITH glasses, which caused me some concern. I went for several post-op checkups before coming to the decision that I did not want my left eye to be doing all the work—reading without glasses and seeing distance with glasses. The right eye was just slacking off! So, even though I knew there were risks involved and I might wind up with worse vision than ever, I decided to go for touch-up surgery in my right eye. This occurred right before my birthday in January of this year.

The clinic intended to “lift” the flap created the first time around with a surgical instrument and then do the laser touch-up. During the surgery, it was discovered that because over a year had passed my flap was resistant to lifting. In some people, their flap can be lifted after a year. Not moi!

This was quite disconcerting, because I had been informed during surgical prep a few days before that if they could not lift the flap, I would be sent home and then brought back another day for PRK surgery, where they sweep off your epithelium layer (after freezing your eyeball) and then they would do the surgery. Thank God the surgeon, in trying to lift my flap, determined that the eye had suffered enough trauma and not to send me home, but to continue on with the PRK. Man, was I nervous, switching surgeries in mid-stream. This meant that I would not get the immediate effects of SBK or LASIK and it would take up to 6 months to achieve potential 20/20 vision.

That six months just elapsed.

I knew before I went in to the clinic yesterday that I didn’t have 20/20 because, if I do put on my glasses, which I haven’t worn in ages, I could see better through the left eye than the right. I suspected that I had just a touch of astigmatism remaining, and it turns out I was right. I have no idea if this touch of astigmatism will improve over the next several months or not, but I don’t care! I have accomplished my goal. I can once more see distance “20/20 minus,” again to say that I could read some but not all letters on the 20/20 line, exactly where I was 24 hours post-SBK in December 2011.

Apparently, I have never been able to see 20/20 out of my right eye, even with lenses, but before I went with monovision this was hard for me to determine. The strange thing is that my right eye is my dominant eye, which was why they didn’t make the left eye the distance eye. However, yesterday in the clinic, the doctor wrote a new prescription for my right eye for my driving glasses and I will be able to see 20/20 out of them (I don’t have them yet). So that’s a blessing! The only time I feel the need to wear glasses is while driving at night. I’m okay in twilight and in rain. In heavy rain, I feel a little better, safer on the road, wearing glasses, because then my left eye is up to speed.

I am so glad my touch-up worked! Whatever happens in the next five years with my eyes, right now I am enjoying the full benefits of monovision, and I don’t require glasses for reading, for the computer OR for distance. The only time the monovision bothers me is in that weird middle distance where the right eye doesn’t quite make up for the left. And this only bothers me when watching a particular TV that could stand to have a touch of a larger screen. 🙂

Phew, what a relief. Some people don’t have successful touch-ups, and I am so thankful that I did!

My eyes are still quite dry, especially the right, after having two laser surgeries in fourteen months. I still can’t spend as much time on the desktop as I used to be able to, and I compensate by wearing yellow-tinted computer specs (no Rx, just the tinting to cut down on blue glare) and also working on my netbook and my iPad when I can. Plus, I still douse my eyes with lots of drops and have it down to a fine routine. I need some right now.

Overall, I am incredibly happy to be where I am with my eyes compared to November 2011, before the surgery.

“See” ya!

Do You Epilogue?

Romance readers, do you like epilogues? Writers, do you like to write them? How do you choose when to write an epilogue?

I have never written an epilogue, however, I just drafted one for the upcoming reissue of BORROWING ALEX, and I think it will wrap up the story nicely. I also added a new scene to the last chapter. I’m not padding for word count. With digital publishing, there’s no reason to (not that I would regardless). The lovely thing about ebooks is that an author can write her story the length it needs to be, or wants to be, I guess. This is especially freeing if you’re, as I am, updating and editing/revising a book that was originally targeted to the category romance market.

While BORROWING ALEX was originally written for a long-defunct Harlequin romantic comedy line, the line shut down just as I was finishing the book. Another category romance romantic comedy line sprung up in its place, but the new line wanted less zany and quirky and more “heartwarming,” as the editor who rejected my manuscript explained. BORROWING ALEX simply did not fit what this major publisher was looking for anymore.

By this time, I had discovered my former ebook and print-on-demand trade paperback publisher, Amber Quill Press. The second edition of HEAD OVER HEELS (which was initially published by a publisher who wasn’t fond of paying authors due royalties), as well as the first edition of BORROWING ALEX, were published by AQP and I had a great editing experience there. However, I (as well as many other ebook authors) was a bit ahead of my time. Kindles and Nooks and iPads didn’t exist and the mass market paperback was still king. That’s my way of saying that the first edition of BORROWING ALEX “enjoyed” a very small audience. I’m looking forward to reaching a larger audience by self-publishing digital and trade paperback editions through my own Blue Orchard Books.

Ebooks have changed the ways readers read, and, to some extent, they have changed how writers write. We are more in tune with readers than ever before. We no longer have to rely on publishing houses to forward letters and emails. Readers can get in touch with us directly. That’s not to say that whatever a reader says goes. Authors are still the creators of our books. However, as the market changes and readers who might not have read a lot of category romance back when that was the only game in town (for a book of about 50,000 words) discover new-to-them authors, I find it interesting to hear what they have to say, in the form of reviews and social media. Often I’ll follow a link from Twitter or Facebook to a reader’s blog and a light bulb will go on.

Recently, I read the term “Insta-Love” on a blog to describe how rapidly romance heroes and heroines fall in love. Readers who might have never read print category romances at all find Insta-Love a little unbelievable. Neither do they necessarily believe that a book needs every single thread tied up neatly in the last scene. However, for those of us schooled in category romance by the biggest category publisher around, well, wrapping up threads was a very strong guideline. And stopping the story as soon as possible after the hero and heroine committed to each other was another. As was getting in a marriage proposal before the book ended. After all, romances are supposed to end on a positive note, and, in category romance, the marriage proposal is the ideal.

That began to change as the readership evolved even within category romance. However, as I said, I initially wrote and published BORROWING ALEX while these tropes were strongly encouraged. Now, going over the book for reissue, even though no one complained (to me, anyway, or in the form of reviews) that my characters were guilty of getting engaged too quickly, I can see that, all right, maybe, in some books, they can slow things down a bit.

And that’s what I’m doing with BORROWING ALEX. The story takes place in the span of five days, and, yes, the H/h do experience Insta-Love. But does that mean they need to experience Insta-Engagement?

I’m not saying where the engagement now occurs in BORROWING ALEX, although some of you might guess (and, no, I couldn’t bring myself to eliminate the engagement entirely and make Alex a Mr. Right Now, because that’s just not who he is). But once the light bulb blinked, “Hey, Cindy, you are allowed to write additional scenes if they forward the story,” and, “Hey, Dimbulb, guess what? An ebook can be longer than 45,000 words computer count and the editor won’t strangle you,” well, it’s opened up a whole new world for me as a writer. To continue to learn and grow and develop as a writer… That’s a good thing and something each of us should continually strive for.

P.S. If you want to “read” the original edition of BORROWING ALEX, it is and will continue to be available as an audio book.

Lastly, I have been trying to feature an author for two weeks in a row, an author who signed up for the promotion with my understanding that their book would be on sale when I posted it. Last week the book wasn’t on sale, so I took it down. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding and we decided to try again this week. Well, the book still isn’t on sale, so I am removing it from my posting again.

Readers, it is not my intention to mislead you with books that are not free or on sale for .99 cents on the day they should be. I have no control over whether an author’s marketing plans go into effect or not, but when something like this happens two weeks in a row, my only decision can to be to remove the listing permanently and not feature it again. This is why I say to make sure to check the listing yourself before you buy or download.

Next week, I have four listings for you!

I have double-checked the prices for Debra Holland’s .99 book and Patricia McLinn’s free book this morning, and they are both where they should be. So go forth and enjoy these talented authors!
