School Daze

School starts late this year in my neck of the woods. It doesn’t even start today. Nope, the first day is tomorrow. It used to start today. By that I mean the day following Labor Day was always the first day of school, as far back as I can remember (ie. when I was in school). However, when Youngest Son was in grade 11 or grade 12, I think it was, the day after Labor Day became a Pro-Development day with school now starting the day after. This year, with school starting on the 9th, is the latest I can remember.

While I no longer have kids in school, I still have one in university. Eldest Son. He begins his last year of his B.A. tomorrow. Youngest Son is taking a year off. He survived a challenging full slate of first year sciences this last year followed by an intense three-course summer session. Next year, the plan is he’ll enrol in university in another province, but for now his brain needs a break.

It’s kind of strange not to have both my kids enrolled in some form of education. Honestly, I feel Y.S. is cheating me out of harassing him about his studies. I can’t hassle E.S., because he’s away for the year and he has it too together, anyway. Not that Y.S. doesn’t have it together, mind you. He definitely does, just in a different way.

When does school start in your part of the world? Are your kids just going back, or have they been attending for weeks? I can not fathom kids in my area of B.C. attending school in August. It’s our hottest month. To me, September = Start of School. However, I guess when you live in an area where it’s always 80 Fahrenheit or higher, it doesn’t matter when school starts, they’re gonna roast regardless.

  1. I have no kids at home, but they started last week by us already. Usually they start on the day after Labor Day. They probably started earlier this year because Labor Day was so late.

  2. My kids start Thursday, the 10th. I don’t ever remember it starting this late. They’re happy about it, though.

Cindy, that must feel very strange not having any kids going back to school. This time of year is like a renewal for me. I count Sept as my “new year” rather than January. This is when I make all my goals for the coming year. Haven’t really done that yet though…

  3. My kids start on Wed. also. School always starts the Wed. after Labor Day, so if Labor Day is late, so is the start of school, which means they’ll get out some time during the 3rd week of June. Aug. and Sept. are hot in So Cal too; June is much cooler, so it works out. I’ll have two in middle school this year – Older Son is straight A student – no worries. Younger Son is not – more worries.

  4. I agree – school should start in September – I grew up in southern Cal and school always started the day after Labor Day. I’ve seen all kinds of dates in other states since. Florida started the earliest – early August – can you believe that? Here in Las Vegas some schools started the end of August and some schools are year-round.

But I love the beginning of the school year and fall – it’s like a new beginning even though I don’t have kids or haven’t been in school for a very long time. 🙂

  5. Well my kids are grown but my grandkids started August 19th. We always start in August where I live in Missouri.

  6. We have no kids, but our older niece went back today, while our two older nephews and younger niece went back LAST Monday (they’re out on the prairies).

As for me, I went back to school today, online, at Langara 🙂 But as it’s online, I can go to school in my jammies, which is sweet!

  7. I grew up in Massachusetts, and we always went back the Wednesday after Labor Day. ALWAYS. For 12 years!

So when I started raising kids in Pennsylvania, I railed, every year, against the ridiculousness of starting the week before Labor Day. I still do, and my oldest is a freshman this year! LOL We started late, too, with LD being late, but some of the local schools started the week before we did, so it’s been weird.

And there’s no good reason for it! They want to get out earlier in June, but it’s JUST as hot at the end of August as it is at the end of June, so there’s no logic there. Plus, all the schools have A/C now, so it’s not even relevant.

I’m just an old curmudgeon. I don’t mind change, even push for it much of the time, but some things should just stay a certain way!

  8. Hi everyone,

Becca, I did have one child returning to university this year. The college/university year has become the new “year” to me (IOW, it ends at the end of April instead of June). So September still feels like a “beginning” to me.

Carol, I don’t know what your youngest’s study habits are like, but one of our sons required a lot of homework supervision, even in grade 11 and 12. The other, once he reached grade 11, it was like he was on a mission and there was no stopping him. He’s been the same ever since.

  9. Hi Kathy,

I love the start of school, too, because I love September. July and August are our hottest months. September can be tres beautiful, and it allows more clothing options. Like, it’s cool enough that you could wear jeans while still being warm enough to wear shorts if you want. This year, July and August were both roasting, like our summers of old. If we didn’t have air conditioning, my feet would have swollen up like an elephant’s, I’m sure.

  10. Teresa, have a great new school year!

Natalie, I agree with you, change ain’t always good, LOL. June can be a very rainy month around here, so I would be ultra-surprised if our province ever began pushing back summer to June and July instead of July and August.

I wonder how early Labour Day falls next year? Hmm, I might have to look that up, as we’re planning a big trip next year but also need to drive our youngest out of province, where he plans to take his second year.
