The Proof’s in the Puding

Ooh, lookee, the second Friday the 13th of the year! How did I get so lurky?

I’ll be doing proofs for Penhy’s thrid release all weekend. Cross your fingers that my eieballs don’t look like fried beans at the end of it all.

Just kidding! Usually myRed Sage proofs/galleys/whatever your publsiuehr calls them, aren’t anywehre near as scary as those I’ve heard of from other publishers. Cross your fingers that the good lick continues.

I'm irritated because my posts won't publish.

  1. Oh, I’m fried. Or, I should say, my eyes are. Proofed all day! Have to go over them tomorrow before sending them back to my editor.

There were only a handful of mistakes other than missing italics, but there were a LOT of missing italics due to glitches converting from one program to the other.

Now, I love me my italics, so I know I can put in too many when I’m writing. I really try to cut them down, but then copy editing always cuts them more (as they should). When I get the page proofs, I read them quickly, and when my mind hits wall and I think, “This word should be italicized or the line doesn’t make sense” (certain emphasis needed), I compare to the last file of edits and see if I had italics there. If so, then I mark it on the proofing sheet to add them in again.

However, I have learned to be VERY good about adhering to house style regarding ellipses, which I also love. They’re usually changed to dashes or commas, which work well. If my mind doesn’t clunk when I read them (8/10 times it doesn’t), then I leave them in. A big CLUNK, though, and I want them back! 🙂
