Going Hexywisdom_pic

Thanks to Cindy for having me here to talk about what makes people remember your books.

One fun part with all the hex titles is that they’re a fun play on blurbs and I tend to make use of it.

Another nice thing is it has the readers remembering the books. Exciting characters also help such as my magic bunny slippers, Fluff and Puff and snarky gargoyle, Horace. They’re excellent counterparts for the witches. Sure, we’ve got the sexy males, but there’s nothing like comic relief.

Over my years in writing I’ve enjoyed writing humorous romance, and the few paranormals I wrote were a blast, but what I’m writing now is like a roller coaster ride.

wisdom_hex_heelsAny paranormal reader will tell you they have incredible choices in the genre. That means we writers have those same choices. I mixed up a witch with a vampire in 50 WAYS TO HEX YOUR LOVER and HEX APPEAL. A witch and wizard in WICKED BY ANY OTHER NAME and a witch and Were Border collie in HEX IN HIGH HEELS. My witches carry their charge cards in one hand and witch flame in the other.

They’re close friends, loyal to the max and always ready to help out each other. I value my friends and I think what I’ve done is give them all a witchy persona. Another good thing about writing paranormal. Anything can be done. I decided the Were didn’t have to be a wolf but a dog, because Border collies are just darn cute.

That’s my mix of characters and creatures. Ones that are fun to work with. Ones that I know I’d like to hang out with and I hope my readers feel the same way.

Blair, my latest witch, is sassy, gifted in the art of revenge, and ready to exact justice for anyone who’s been wronged. She’s ready for romance; so no wonder she’s actively pursing local hunky handyman/Were Border collie Jake Harrison. She deals with gross elves you’d never see in Santa’s workshop, villainous Weres who also happen to be Jake’s family members, and Fluff and Puff without breaking a nail. And when those Weres throw down a nasty spell on Jake, be sure that Blair does her best to save her guy from the unthinkable.

That’s what my witches do. And why they’re so much fun to write and so real to me. Probably why my bunny slippers never seem to be where I left them!

What about you? What do you love in paranormal books?

Linda

  1. Hi Linda,
Fun blog. 🙂 I laud you and those who write paranormal. I have a trilogy idea, but freak out at the paranormal aspect. I love that you dared twist the perception of were – good for you! I agree, fun is a fabulous bar. My sincere pleasure to ‘meet’ you, and I wish you every success!

  2. Thanks Diana,

Actually paranormal isn’t that difficult if you see a twisted side to the world. :} Plus think of fairy tales. They’re paranormal.

I enjoy putting out a skewed sense of the world. And why the bunny slippers.

  3. Hi Linda – welcome to the blog!

I confess that I don’t usually read paranormal. My tastes run more to straight contemporary or contemporary with a mystery element. I do like paranormal elements in contemporaries, it just isn’t the first sub-genre I reach for. I’m definitely in the minority there! Paranormals are doing very well right now.

Your series sounds like great fun. I love the covers. Very cute. I’ll have to give more paranormals a try.

  4. Besides a good dose of humor thrown in, I love mixing up the folklore or standard concepts of the supernatural creatures in paranormal books. I think it helps give the characters more interesting issues to deal with.

If I have to read about one more angsty vampire, well I will just have to hurl the book across the room;) How about an OCD vampire? They do that the need to count thing, right?

    Great post:)

  5. Ditzy that I am, I bought HEX APPEAL first, then realized it wasn’t the first. I quickly corrected that with a trip to the bookstore and am now about 3/4 of the way through 50 WAYS TO HEX YOUR LOVER and loving it! HEX APPEAL is waiting on my TBR shelf. 😉

  6. Wish I could remember the first paranormal I read but cannot. Good thing I enjoy them since they are popular genre. Ever so often I consider creating a chart to keep track of all the different types of paranormal creatures and the characteristics the author gives them, but that takes away too much time from reading.
I have not read your Hex series of books but will be on the look out for them.

  7. Hi Linda, thanks for the great interview! Your witches sound so fun and sassy, and perfect for the season!

I love paranormal books because anything can happen — and because the alpha heroes tend to be really alpha, but the heroines are no shrinking violets!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  8. I enjoy reading paranormal books because in them it seems all things are possible, and reasonable. Where else would we expect a witch, vampire, shapeshifter to live in the normal world. I particularly enjoy witch stories. I have always enjoyed watching old re-runs of Charmed for that reason. I will look forward to reading your book.

  9. I just found your Hex series of books. I just finished Hex in High Heels and bought all the rest on Amazon and can’t wait to dig into those! I can promise you I will never forget the sidekicks in your books. I LOVE the bunny slippers Fluff & Puff, Felix, and Horace characters so much.

I love when an author ties in previous and/or “yet to have a story of their own” characters. It makes me want to know what happened before and crave to find out what’s next for a series.

I look for books who have their own twist to the paranormal rather than continue to spew the same myths that others have created. Those that “buck the system” if you will. It was love at first bunny slipper tattoo for me. I about laughed myself off my chair when they ripped up the notes they’d been taking.

I don’t want to give anything away to those who have not read Hex in High Heels but will Blair’s lake friend/savior be making an appearance in future books?

  10. Thank you! Yes, the slippers have a mind of their own. They always know how to save their little fuzzy butts too.

And why they’re tattooed on my ankle and I had Horace recently tattooed on my other ankle.

Yes, the savior will be showing up again.

    Linda

  11. Thanks Dorothy.

I like to write the kind of books I enjoy reading.

One friend sent me a screaming email because she was late to work since she couldn’t stop reading the book.

  12. I’ve been telling people for a couple years that I’d rather have a were-cocker spaniel than a werewolf. Much more cuddly than a wolf. A border collie works, too!

  13. Your books sound like great fun and I can’t wait to check them out. I like books that are pure escapism which is why I love books with paranormal elements.

  14. Sorry I’m a little late today announcing the winner. Dealing with spam issues.
