Autumn Glory

Quick, other than the amazing color, what do you notice about this maple?

See the glimpse of asphalt through the leaves on the ground? This tree is in the middle of a driveway! This isn’t a very good angle, so you can’t really see that it’s in the middle of the driveway, but, trust me, it is. And that’s what I totally love about this maple. The owners didn’t chop it down when it became apparent that it was overtaking their driveway. No, they just drive around it.

You can glimpse the little house behind the tree. The roofline of the house is hidden under the first row of leaves on the right. That gives you some idea how huge this maple tree is.

  1. OMG! I love the tree, too, and the people who kept the tree in their driveway. I want characters like that in my book.

  2. Hi, Edie! LOL, it’s all story fodder, right? You’re right, folks like that would make great characters.

Teresa, maple trees create a big mess when you have to rake, but I have two sons and a husband, so… We also have a big rider mower, because we’re on a double lot. So that makes the job easier. However, sweeping the driveway when all leaves have fallen is usually my job–and it’s a two-entrance driveway, so velly big. But I adore my five maples regardless. I’ve become quite the deciduous tree lover.

  3. Cindy – I know ALL about raking maple leaves – we had two in our backyard while I was growing up (one had to come down a few years ago). And here we don’t have to worry about raking up!

  4. LOL, Teresa. I had to re-read the first comment to figure out what you meant. My mind automatically supplied “trees.”

ROFLOL – yeah, that’d be something, raking two leaves…

  5. That tree is so cool!

I have three maples, myself. Several years ago, my husband built a kick-ass tree house, bolting it right to the tree. He was told that would kill the tree. PFAA! It flourished. Now, at least four times a season, we have a line of leaves at our curb for pickup that’s 3+ feet tall, 15 feet long, and 2-3 feet wide. It’s always the biggest on the street!

  6. LOL, Natalie, we have a treehouse in one of our maples, too. The kids haven’t used it in years (too old). The cat goes up in it sometimes, though.
