Here’s how to play the party game.

Anyone can play! All you have to do is “kidnap” this logo and post it on your blog or website. Copy and paste the jpg image of the anniversary gift to your own blog or website to kidnap it. Be sure to include these instructions so people know how to play!

Invite your readers and friends to send an email with the subject line “Ransom Note” to [email protected]. Inside this email, they must include a link back to your kidnapped logo.

Then you and your friend will both be entered into a drawing to win free trade paperbacks! Every time one of your readers sends a ransom note with a link, you will be entered again! Each Ransom Note is worth two entries in the drawing—one for the person who sends the Ransom Note, and one for the linked blog or website. And you both can win!

Want more chances to win? Invite your readers and friends to kidnap this logo, and then you can enter again by sending a Ransom Note linking to your friend’s blog or website!

The Proof’s in the Puding

Ooh, lookee, the second Friday the 13th of the year! How did I get so lurky?

I’ll be doing proofs for Penhy’s thrid release all weekend. Cross your fingers that my eieballs don’t look like fried beans at the end of it all.

Just kidding! Usually myRed Sage proofs/galleys/whatever your publsiuehr calls them, aren’t anywehre near as scary as those I’ve heard of from other publishers. Cross your fingers that the good lick continues.

Sourcebooks Pitch Opportunity!

Here’s a great opportunity for unagented writers. On Thursday, January 29th—three days from now—Sourcebooks editor Deb Werksman is accepting 50-word pitches on the Casablanca Authors Blog. Ms. Werksman, along with the Sourcebooks publicist and Casablanca blog authors, will decide on the winner (I hope I got that right), who then gets to submit her/his full manuscript for Ms. Werksman’s consideration with a guaranteed reply within 3-4 weeks.

Believe me, a guaranteed reply in such a short time span is something you want.

You have from one minute after noon January 29th until noon January 30th to post your pitch to the Comments trail of Ms. Werksman’s blog on Casablanca Authors, appearing January 29th. Please note, do NOT post your pitches to THIS blog. You can leave me a note thanking me for telling you about this opportunity (I’d love that), but I can not accept pitches for the contest. If you submit your pitch here, I’ll just have to delete it. And, no, I won’t forward it to Ms. Werksman, either.

That’s a direct quote from the Casa Authors blog. So don’t submit a pitch if you’ve finished a manuscript but it’s not the absolute best it can be. Polish that sucker and wait for another opportunity. It does you no good to send in a blurb for non-polished work, because the winner’s name will be announced on the Casa Authors blog February 14th and the winner will then only have until the 16th to submit her/his full manuscript. If your work isn’t polished, it’s not likely you’ll receive an offer of publication, which just wastes everyone’s time.

Completely unrelated… Ever since I did my last WordPress update, the Insert Link thingie for the Visual (ie. not the HTML) editor has refused to work. That meant I could not choose the “open in new window” option for inserting outside links. Quite annoying. Now, writing this post, suddenly the Visual Editor link inserter works. When did this happen? Did someone update my WordPress for me without my knowledge? (Elle??)

At any rate, I’m thankful to have this option open to me again. I hate it when I’m visiting a blog or website, follow a link, and then can’t find my way back to the original site or blog again. A very wise person once told me to always make it easy for browsers to return to my site after exploring links. Otherwise, really, your site is just portal to others.
