Go, Go, Gokey…Gone!

Le sigh.

I really wanted Danny Gokey to make it to the American Idol finals last night. Alas, it was not to be. I went into the episode expecting either Danny or Adam Lambert to get kicked off. As much as I’m not into Kris Allen, I thought he did a good job this week, and the dramatic thing would be for him to make it into the finals ahead of the two expected choices.

The good thing for me is now I know who to root for next week—Adam. If Adam and Danny had both made it through, I would have had to wait until next Tuesday’s performances to make my final determination, and, honestly, I don’t think it would have mattered to me which of them won the whole smackeroo.

Now, I definitely know I want Adam Lambert to win.

And Gokey will be okay. When you see what non-finalists like Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry have done with their careers, well, I think it’s only natural to assume we can expect the same from Danny Gokey. He’s got a multitude of talent, and his voice is very unique.

So…any Danny lovers out there who wished he hadn’t been kicked off? Who will you vote for/root for now that he has been? I don’t vote myself. Being Canadian, I don’t feel it’s my place. But I do “root” for a finalist. This year, that’s Adam Lambert.

Go, Go, Lambie!

  1. Me! Though I don’t live in Milwaukee, I was born and grew up there. Of course I’m a Danny fan.

I think Paula screwed him by giving him a song to sing that was inane and isn’t the kind of song he should sing. If he would’ve had two great songs, that would’ve made a difference.

Kris has all the little girls voting for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he won. I have to say, though, that he has a lot of talent. He doesn’t have the best voice of the three, but he knows how to use it.

All three are different, and I can see them all making it big. Same thing with Allison from last week. I hope Matt makes it big, too. I can see him on Broadway in a musical.

  2. Hi Edie, I actually like the song Paula chose. I hadn’t heard it before, but I thought he did a good job.

The little girls voting for Kris explains things. Yes, he would appeal to young teenagers much more than the other two, I would think. I agree that he has a lot of talent. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t resonate with me. I think it’s like liking an author’s voice. You either do or you don’t.

  3. I think the “hometown hero” segments really underline who the Idol demographic is: tween girls. Has it always been that way, or is this increasingly the case, and if so, how will a woman ever win again?

Think Adam has a magnificent voice, but I still don’t quite warm to the high theatre thing. And I swear, if he doesn’t get that Gene Simmons (?) tongue of his back inside his mouth I will cut it off! (Actually someone told me that’s part of the technique required to hold those big high notes, but how come no one else has to do it?). Regardless, the man will clearly have a career. And, I must say, I think he has handled the goss about his sexual orientation really, really wonderfully. Seems to me his message is it’s irrelevant and none of your beeswax.

If I could vote (I didn’t think we ‘nucks could Cindy – ???) I think it would be Kris, though I’m am still in mourning for Allison.

Am looking forward to a finale where I don’t mind who wins. Last year, I minded. Was way too cool (read: old) to admit it, but I did.

  4. I like all three and think they can do well-funny, I am an avid watcher each year- unitl it comes to the final. I skip it, because I don’t vote. But I like to watch their careers happen or don’t… kind of like writing. Cheers!

  5. Shelinda, I’m trying to think of how many women compared to men have won. I haven’t watched AI since the beginning, but just going by the winners, I think in 8 seasons only 3 winners have been guys, including this year’s winner. There’ll be this year’s winner, then Cook, then the big guy whose name I can’t recall (Clay Aiken was the runner up that year, and I wasn’t watching then). I think all the rest have been women, so the women are winning more often.

Someone asked me about Adam’s sexual orientation a few days ago–the first I’d heard that there was a question. I’ll admit, I don’t have many chances to practice my gaydar for either gender, but the whole thing surprised me. Who cares?

  6. Nancy, that’s funny that you don’t watch the finals. They sing three songs each, if I remember correctly. And usually they’re re-singing a song from earlier in the competition, so you might get a chance to hear a favourite again.

  7. Are you thinking of the eminently forgettable Taylor Hicks? But has it changed? Has the demographic increasingly become the bopper girls? I dont’ know, but I suspect so. (I’ve only watched the last two seasons too).

The back stories add to the fun, and I just think it’s really cool the way Adam is openly gay while never talking or even hinting about it. Never bites when Ryan says stuff like “you’ve done Cher, you’ve done Streisand, what’s next?”. There’s something powerful in his silence on the matter.

  8. Oh, I forgot Taylor Hicks. No, that’s not who I meant. Gah, why can’t I remember his name? I think he won the second season.

I liked Taylor Hicks and was glad he won. I even bought his CD. It felt “Idol Americanized,” however. The song he sung this year on the series sounded more like “him.”

I’d say the past couple of years, the voting is getting better. At least the most talented people, whether they’re to a viewer’s taste or not, are making it to the final 3 and 4. I’ve really shaken my head at some of the folks who have made it to the final 3 in previous years. This year, the people who, IMNSHO, should have made it to the final 4, did make it. Even though Kris’s performances aren’t to my taste, he deserved to continue moving up.

As for Adam, I didn’t notice Ryan’s comments, LOL. Seacrest makes similar comments to Simon frequently enough to notice, and Simon makes them back to him. It’s like an on-going thing. Call me clueless. Just Adam’s hair and his eyeliner isn’t enough to make my gaydar go on alert. To me, that just said “rock star.” Background in musical theatre? To me, that screamed “80s glam reborn.” But, nope, no gaydar went off.

People have always told me I’m dense. Guess they’re right. 😉

  9. Okay, with Taylor Hicks winning one year, Adam or Kris winning this year, Cookie winning last year, and The Big Guy Who Won The Year Clay Aiken Was Runner-Up all winning guys, looks like it’s 4 for 4. A tie among genders!

    Next year might get dirty.

  10. Okay, Shelinda, if you come back, it was driving me nuts, so I Googled. Ruben Studdard was the name of the Season 2 winner.

Now I can watch the Grey’s Anatomy season finale tonight with all my grey matter intact (ha, little pun).

  11. So Peter and I talked about this last night, which is pretty pathetic, but there it is. With kids our age you can’t talk about the middle east or Pakistan on the brink, you have to settle for American Idol as a topic that can be fully canvassed before a rug rats jumps on you and screech in your ear they need feeding again.

Anywhooooo… we are convinced Kris will win, and here’s why: Adam has little growth potential in terms of voting blocs. This past week Ryan said of the 88 million votes cast, only one million votes separated the first and second place finishers. Adam has pretty much fully tapped his voting universe. We surmise most of the Gokey voters will move to Kris. Partly that’s singing style, but in no small measure it’s also the Christian bloc. Both Danny and Kris are declared Christians, and a quick google search suggests the Christians are a sizable voting bloc and they will move from Danny to Kris. Add to that the fact that Adam is seen as the front runner (meaning Kris’s fans are more motivated to vote), and we’re predicting Idol Kris Allen.

Remember, you heard it here first…

(Man, this limb I’m way out on is feeling shaky)

  12. I think I agree with you. (Note, I only “think” I do – this covers me if you’re wrong). 😉 I heard or read somewhere the other day that the Danny votes would go to Kris, which surprised me, because I was assuming they’d go to Adam. However, given the Christian angle (I knew Danny was, but I didn’t know about Kris until yesterday) and all the new revelations about Adam (thanks to you, LOL), it makes sense that those votes would shift to Danny.

I still want Adam to win, though. And I still wish it were he and Danny in the finals. That would have been some competition.

Well, time to obsess about something else, huh? I don’t suppose you watch So You Think You Can Dance? (the virgin Canadian edition this year was better than the American, which has been around for a handful of years).
