Happy October!

Wow, I can’t believe only three months remain in 2008. I’ve been busier than a bunny in a frat house since attending RWA National in San Francisco at the end of July/beginning of August. In the last month, I’ve gone out of town twice, have been busy researching and writing (although not as much writing as I’d like, due to the two trips), and doing intense post-kid-moved-to-university fall cleaning (as of this past weekend I’m nearly finished the basement and this coming weekend I’ll tackle his room). Canadian Thanksgiving is around the corner, which means more cooking and cleaning and visiting (Eldest Son is coming home—yeah!).

As I write this, the air is crisp but the sky is a clear, brilliant blue and the sun is wonderfully bright. Now, I’m a September-lover, but if this weather keeps up, I’ll be more than happy to relish October. Or maybe that’s my cold talking. My sore throat is clearing up, but my ears are clogging, so I can’t hear anyone whine—if that doesn’t make a person happy, what will?

How about you? Do you have favorite months of the year? Which are they and why? I’m partial to May and September. I love July and August because they’re summer, but I find it depressing when they don’t act like summer. And October…with the leaves changing and the snow staying where it belongs (up in the sky), it feels like my last chance to savor the outdoors…before November swoops its gray skies and clouds and potential snowstorms and icy winds and slick roads upon me.

  1. I love November and December. I am a holiday freak, plus since I grew up *not* in Texas, I love the cooler weather. Can’t quite describe how much I hate that it’s October 1 and still 90 degrees here!

  2. October is very definitely my favorite month:

–Lots of perfect weather, with crisp nights and warm days
    –Football!
    –Soccer!

October is cozy and warm-colored and the harbinger of the holiday season, when everyone loves everyone else and prepares for fun things. I also like May, probably because it feels like hope to me. I hate February and March, and don’t care for August that much. 🙂

  3. It all depends – if April is decent, I really like it 🙂 Spring weather is always welcome. And I don’t mind Sept/Oct too much once I’ve accepted that summer is over.

But I guess, if forced to choose, I’d say July – heat, light and sun.

  4. Avery, I don’t blame you for wanting it to be cooler than 90 degrees in October, but you can have the sleet and tons of snow in December. The romanticism dies when you’re shoveling.

  5. Natalie, I love your take on May. February is pretty bad around here, because that’s the month that usually feels like winter will never end.

I do like August, though, because I both married during that month and Youngest Son was born in August. Also, my now-dead grandfather was born in August. We always had a huge celebration on his birthday.

Up here, August is more trustworthy for sun than July, as well. July can rain like a bandit.

  6. Teresa, yes, April can be wonderful. I love spring! I think spring and autumn are rapidly becoming my favourite seasons. Be sure to check back Monday. I’m posting a picture of a massive tree with beautiful changing leaves that’s very unique in one particular aspect.

  7. This week! It’s my favorite time of year in the Midwest right NOW–late Sept./early Oct. I love it when the leaves begin changing, when the sky is that incredible autumn blue, when it’s warm enough to go without a leather jacket but perfectly cozy with an old sweatshirt… 🙂

  8. Oh, gosh, Marilyn, you should be a writer! Um, excuse me, I mean you ARE a wonderful writer. Your description makes me want to go jump in some leaves. Except my maples haven’t shed yet. Still waiting for them to turn orange.

I have some great old photos of the kids when they were little in those big leaf piles. I should find them and scan them and post them to the blog. Sigh. Digital photography is so much simpler…

I love it right now because I’m not using air conditioning and I’m not really using heat, either. I just close the windows during the day and open them at night, and let the wonderful cool breeze fill the bedroom while I snuggle under my down quilt in my PJS, my beagle a lump beside me, and DH, well, he’s OOT tonight…otherwise, he’d be a lump beside me, too and the beagle would be in the beagle house.

  9. I’m in the midwest — one state away from Marilyn. I love the crisper weather but hate the shorter days. I want to hole up and watch TV at night. And read books. And eat. Get the fat on my body like a bear ready to hibernate. So far I’ve managed to stay the same weight. Yeah!

  10. Hi Edie!

I must say, I haven’t noticed the days getting shorter, although they undoubtedly are. I mean, it’s not light at 10 p.m. anymore, that’s for sure. Now you’ve reminded me that soon night will really look like night. Sheesh, thanks a lot! I’ve lost my October buzz. 😉

  11. Well, that’s why October is so great. Yeah, it’s darker sooner, but we’re talking 7:15, which is still “night,” so it’s okay.

When it’s dark before 5, THAT’S when I go into mopedown.

  12. Ahh, changing leaves. I do miss that mass of colour from Ontario. We lived near huge stands maples that were technicolor each fall. At some point, we may plant a maple or two here.

Looking forward to seeing your picture 🙂

  13. I love maples. We have one red maple and four green. They have yet to change colour or begin to lose leaves.

Yes, I will post the picture! It’s of a tree in my town, but not in my yard.
